Hello, dear reader! We apologize for the delay in updating our travel blog, but rest assured, we have exciting tales to share from our time in Tokyo. Buckle up as we take you on a thrilling adventure through this vibrant city!

After our delightful dining experience at the Pokemon Cafe (which we covered in our previous post), we continued exploring Tokyo with boundless energy. Our third day took us to Shibuya, a bustling neighborhood known for its iconic sights and endless shopping opportunities. But before we stimulated the economy, we headed off to an interactive art exhibit called TeamLab Planets. I will only briefly talk about this, and only post a few photos below as to not spoil the rooms, but to say this place was magical would be an understatement. TeamLab Planets was a full body art exhibit, where you take off your shoes and socks, lay on the floor, wade through water, and are fully surrounded by the art. One room that really stood out was the Koi pond. Entering through a darkened tunnel, your feet touch water and you wade deeper and deeper until the water level is almost to knee level. You then enter the pond where projections of koi fish swim around you, reacting to your movement. It really was incredible and we could have easily spent hours in there staring at the fish, and wading in thew water. Our first stop after this was the Tokyo Nintendo store, one of only two such stores in the world (the other being in New York City). As avid fans of Nintendo games, we couldn’t resist the allure of this gaming paradise. Picture yourself surrounded by beloved IPs like Animal Crossing, Splatoon, and the legendary Legend of Zelda. Needless to say, we left with a few souvenirs to cherish.

As we meandered through the labyrinthine streets, we noticed something intriguing—many shops in Tokyo have a similar vibe, yet each has its own distinctive charm. Undeterred, we ventured into every nook and cranny, uncovering hidden gems and unique finds along the way. It’s true what they say: Tokyo is a shopaholic’s dream!

As the sun began its descent, we had a special evening reservation at Tokyo Sky Tree, an awe-inspiring observation spot that allowed us to take in the vast expanse of Tokyo from over 40 stories high. We timed our visit perfectly to witness a breathtaking sunset, transforming the sky into a fiery canvas of orange hues, while the city below began to shimmer with countless lights. Standing on the open-air observation deck, we felt an exhilarating rush, immersing ourselves in the sheer grandeur of Tokyo.

As the chilly night air started nipping at our noses, we sought solace in a warm and satisfying dinner. We had heard buzz on social media about a restaurant called Yakiniku Hormone Takeda Shibuya and its unique offerings. Intrigued, we decided to give it a try. Now, let me tell you about their secret weapon: lemon sours. For a mere $5, we could indulge in unlimited servings of this refreshing beverage for 90 minutes, with a tap right at your table! And boy, were they strong! To mix things up, we even added flavoring syrups like ramune and mango for an extra dollar. With our glasses brimming with tantalizing concoctions, we navigated the menu on a tablet, embracing the thrill of surprise. Our taste buds were in for an adventure as we feasted on various cuts of meat, expertly grilled on the tabletop grill before us. Little did we know that we were savoring wagyu tongue and intestine, which might sound off-putting, but trust us, they were absolutely delectable. The combination of the mouthwatering dishes and the invigorating lemon sours made for an unforgettable dining experience. To cap off the night, we decided to test our luck at a crane game store and, to our sheer delight, both Alex and I walked away triumphant, clutching Pokemon plushies we had skillfully won.

Day 4 brought us to the enchanting realm of Tokyo Disneyland. Bright and early, we embarked on a magical journey, boarding the train to the happiest place in Japan. Tokyo Disney mirrored its American counterpart with classic attractions like Cinderella Castle, Haunted Mansion, and Pirates of the Caribbean. However, there were two exclusive rides that piqued our interest and we simply couldn’t miss.

Our first stop was Pooh’s Honey Hunt, a trackless ride that whisked us away on a whimsical adventure through the world of Winnie the Pooh. Despite the hour-long wait, the experience was worth every second, immersing us in a captivating story as Pooh embarked on a honey-seeking escapade in his dream—or should we say, nightmare? It was a delightful start to our day.

But hold on tight, because the next ride we encountered was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Sleeping Beauty Castle, a true gem of Tokyo Disneyland, boasted a ride that had captured the imagination of visitors all day long, resulting in a staggering 180-minute wait. Luckily, Tokyo Disney offers a Premier Pass system, allowing us to choose a specific time slot for popular attractions by paying a nominal fee (around $11-12). Serendipitously, we spotted an available slot right next to us and eagerly hopped in line. Without spoiling the ride, let me tell you, the animatronics were mind-blowing. Their lifelike movements and incredible attention to detail made them almost indistinguishable from real people. It was an enchanting experience that solidified itself as the highlight of our amusement park adventures so far.

The remainder of our day at Disney was filled with classic Disney magic—more rides, shopping, and delectable treats. One culinary delight that caught our attention was the pork cutlet curry, a dish not commonly found in the US. Its tantalizing flavors left us craving more. Surprisingly, the food within the park was reasonably priced, with none of our meals exceeding $20 for the two of us. Oh, and how can I forget the most rattling experience – the earthquake. While we were in line for the Haunted Mansion everyone’s phones began to make a “whooping” alarm sound. Glancing at the new notification, it warned of a strong earthquake and to take cover. unsure what to do, we glanced around. That is when the staff at Disney had everyone sit down just as the earth started to move. Just off the coast of Chiba, a fairly short distance from where we currently were a 6.2 magnitude quake had it. Trees and standing umbrellas began to sway; it felt like we were on the deck of a boat on a rough sea. After about 10 minutes the shaking stopped, and everyone was allowed to stand up again. Things like this must happen a lot, because everyone immediately went back to as things were before the earth started moving. Luckily, there was no major damage or any injuries reported.

Day 5 held a truly remarkable and heartwarming experience that surpassed all expectations—the DAWN Avatar Robot Cafe Version Beta. Nestled within Tokyo’s vibrant streets, this cafe showcased a groundbreaking concept that left us in awe. Stepping inside, we were immediately greeted by a wave and a cheerful “Hello, do you have a reservation?” from an OriHime robot—a captivating avatar controlled by individuals with disabilities who are unable to work outside their homes. As we settled into our seats, we observed the bustling scene—OriHime robots gliding gracefully around the cafe, carrying trays of drinks, interacting with customers, and posing for photographs. It was a sight to behold, unlike anything we had ever witnessed before.

At our table, a small OriHime robot came to life, introducing himself as Carly. Paralyzed from the neck down due to a severed spinal cord, Carly found solace and purpose in his work at DAWN. With remarkable dexterity, he controlled the OriHime’s movements, utilizing his arms, neck, and head. A nearby iPad allowed him to communicate with us, displaying the menu, maps of the restaurant, and even pictures of himself. Through the integrated speaker and microphones, we engaged in a delightful conversation with Carly. Our topics ranged from movies and video games to TV shows, and we were astonished by his impeccable English, which he confessed to learning by repeatedly watching “Top Gun.” His passion for his job and genuine enthusiasm radiated throughout our interaction, leaving a profound impact on us.

As we enjoyed our lunch, a larger OriHime robot approached our table, carrying our drinks on a tray. With a friendly wave and warm conversation, she shared that she hailed from Osaka, a city 500 kilometers away from Tokyo. It was remarkable to witness the immense capabilities of these avatars and the empowering effect they had on individuals with disabilities. The DAWN Avatar Robot Cafe Version Beta offered a glimpse into a future where disabled individuals can experience life to the fullest, freely navigating the world like any other able-bodied person. Goosebumps coursed through our bodies as we reflected on the profound implications of this pioneering endeavor.

While our adventures in Tokyo were filled with captivating sights and experiences, the DAWN Avatar Robot Cafe Version Beta undeniably stood out as the crowning jewel of our trip thus far. Its groundbreaking concept and the inspiring stories of those controlling the OriHime avatars reminded us that disabilities should never hinder one’s ability to live a fulfilling life. This extraordinary cafe left an indelible mark on our hearts, forever etching itself as a highlight of our journey. As we continued our exploration of Tokyo, we cherished the memories made at this exceptional establishment, eagerly anticipating the next chapter of our adventure.

On Day 6, our adventure led us to the vibrant districts of Harajuku and Shinjuku, infusing our experience with the pulsating energy of Tokyo. As we stepped into Harajuku on a bustling Sunday, we instantly became immersed in the heart of Japan’s street fashion scene—a melting pot of trendy styles favored by Tokyo’s vibrant youth. It was the perfect opportunity to indulge in the authentic flavors of Japanese street food, and our taste buds were in for a treat.

Our culinary journey began at a stall I had previously discovered online: Rainbow Grilled Cheese. Its street sign displayed a picture of a perfectly crafted sandwich, showcasing an assortment of vivid colors, reminiscent of a radiant rainbow. Curiosity piqued, we eagerly ordered the rainbow grilled cheese, a rainbow corndog (with the same delectable cheese filling), and a side of fried garlic butter potatoes. As I pulled apart my grilled cheese sandwich, I marveled at its picture-perfect resemblance to the image. And the taste? Simply exquisite. I couldn’t fathom how they managed to achieve such a mesmerizing visual display with the cheese, but it was a delightful feast for the senses. Every dish we savored was equally exceptional. To complement our meal, we couldn’t resist trying the candied strawberries and grapes on skewers, coated in a sugary glaze that provided a satisfying crunch. And to top it all off, we ascended to the upper floor of the same building, where we encountered the largest cotton candy I had ever laid eyes on. Though our appetites were somewhat sated, we managed to devour about 75% of the fluffy, rainbow-colored cloud.

Concluding our culinary escapade in Harajuku, we embarked on a brief stroll to the nearby Meiji Jingu shrine, a sanctuary that exuded tranquility and reverence. This awe-inspiring shrine was erected in honor of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, their spirits revered and immortalized within its sacred grounds. Originally completed in 1920, the shrine unfortunately fell victim to the ravages of World War II but was lovingly reconstructed in subsequent years. Emperor Meiji, the first emperor of modern Japan, ascended to the throne in 1867, and this revered shrine stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. Renowned as one of Japan’s most popular shrines, it warmly welcomes nearly 3 million visitors during the first days of the New Year. As we embarked on a serene walk through the sprawling Yoyogi Park, a verdant oasis dotted with colossal trees, the ambiance enveloped us in tranquility. The path meandered through the dense canopy, shielding us from the sun, creating a haven of serenity amidst the bustling metropolis. The moment we laid eyes on the shrine, hidden like a sacred treasure amidst the lush foliage, we were transported to a realm far removed from the city’s frenetic pace. To enter the shrine, we meticulously purified our hands and mouths—a customary ritual performed by rinsing our hands with water from delicate bamboo spigots and gently swishing water in our mouths before spitting it out.

Once inside, the sublime beauty of the temple unfolded before us, its elegance heightened by the towering trees that embraced its sacred presence. It was a sight to behold—a fleeting moment where we momentarily forgot we were in the midst of the world’s largest city. Adhering to the customary practice we had learned in a previous post, we reverently tossed a coin, bowed our heads, clapped our hands, and bowed once more—a gesture that resonated with a profound sense of respect. After this serene encounter, we embarked on a peaceful stroll back through the park, ready to embark on the next leg of our adventure.

Our day continued with a visit to a train tunnel in pursuit of a scene from the anime movie “Suzume” that had captured our imagination prior to arriving in Japan. In order to preserve the movie’s magic, I won’t divulge any further details, but I wholeheartedly encourage you to watch it and experience the enchantment for yourself. As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves in Shinjuku, eager to catch a glimpse of the iconic Godzilla and to immerse ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the district. Our final stop, the Tokyo Matrix, awaited us—an attraction intricately designed around the beloved anime “Sword Art Online.” Equipped with a device that transformed into a sword, we chose our avatars and tapped our keys against the wall, unlocking the labyrinth that lay before us. Inside, a captivating blend of escape room and obstacle course elements challenged our wits and agility, inviting us to overcome obstacles, leap, and crawl through the immersive experience.

Day 6 had unveiled a kaleidoscope of flavors, traditions, and captivating encounters. Harajuku’s pulsating fashion scene and the delectable street food offerings left an indelible mark on our taste buds, while the serene stroll to the Meiji Jingu shrine offered respite from the city’s fervor. Immersed in the spirit of anime, we embarked on a magical quest within the Tokyo Matrix, capping off the day with a vibrant exploration of Shinjuku’s energetic streets. Our journey through Tokyo continued to unfold, each day bringing new wonders and enriching our souls with unforgettable memories.

Welcome to Day 7, our final day in Tokyo, where we set out to experience the enchanting wonderland of DisneySea. Unlike my usual meticulously planned Disney trips, DisneySea offered a different allure. With fewer rides designed specifically for adults, this extraordinary park focuses on creating an immersive atmosphere. Situated by the ocean, DisneySea is ingeniously themed around the seven seas, with each land drawing inspiration from real-world locations like Greece, Italy, Saudi Arabia, and Boston. These diverse lands are interconnected by meandering waterways and picturesque bridges, weaving a tapestry of exploration and adventure.

Prepare to be dazzled as DisneySea takes theming to a whole new level, elevating the art of immersion to unprecedented heights. Forget about castles—here, the awe-inspiring Mt. Prometheus takes center stage, a colossal volcano that erupts in bursts of fiery spectacle. Our first stop was a captivating journey 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea aboard Captain Nemo’s submarine, followed by an exhilarating descent to the core of the Earth on the Journey to the Center of the Earth ride—a thrilling fusion of a dark ride and roller coaster. The experience left us breathless, and I’ll let the pictures below speak for themselves, capturing the essence of DisneySea’s magic.

Now, let’s talk about Duffy—the unexpected superstar of DisneySea. Surprisingly larger than life, this charming character has eclipsed even Mickey in popularity. But who is Duffy? A stuffed bear with a fascinating backstory. In an attempt to seamlessly integrate Mickey into DisneySea’s unique ambiance, Minnie created Duffy as a companion for Mickey’s oceanic adventures. And what a hit Duffy became! You couldn’t help but notice the adorable bear and his entourage scattered throughout the park. Apart from the fantastic parade featuring Mickey and friends sailing the park’s central lake, DisneySea subtly diverges from the typical Disney park experience. Brace yourself for surprises at every turn.

One of our ride highlights was the Tower of Terror, an awe-inspiring attraction that outshines its American counterpart. The incredible storytelling, which we cleverly deduced through context clues, and impeccable theming left us astounded. During the pre-show, there was a moment that left everyone gasping in astonishment—a puzzling marvel that still has me scratching my head in wonder. If you’ve experienced it, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Another standout was the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ride, an innovative reinterpretation of a beloved classic. The experience surpassed the movie itself, which really isn’t hard to do but it added a unique twist to an iconic adventure. Overall, words alone cannot capture the sheer beauty of DisneySea. Without a doubt, it stands as the pinnacle of all Disney parks I’ve had the pleasure of visiting.

As our last night in Tokyo approached, I ventured onto Tabelog, the Japanese equivalent of Yelp, to find a sushi restaurant near our hotel. Surprisingly, after a week in Japan, we hadn’t enjoyed any sushi yet! Fortunately, a hidden gem awaited us just a few blocks away on the sixth floor of an unassuming building. Upon entering, we were directed to a private room where, for a mere $35, we indulged in an all-you-can-eat sushi feast for two hours. For an additional $10, we had the option to quench our thirst with unlimited drinks. Opting for refreshing melon soda instead of alcohol, mindful of our early morning plans, we discovered the joy of ordering through a tablet at our table. A few minutes later, a gentle knock on our sliding door signaled the arrival of our delectable plates. Apart from expressing our gratitude, we reveled in the solitude—an introvert’s dream. Every sushi piece we savored was impeccable, and to our surprise, the French fries they served were among the best we had ever tasted. Sprinkled with a delightful seaweed seasoning salt, they proved to be an unexpected delight. Unlike the American sushi experience, this restaurant focused exclusively on nigiri, which suited me perfectly. One standout favorite was the salmon nigiri adorned with a pesto-like sauce. With satisfied palates, we returned to the hotel to pack, realizing we had accumulated so much during our Tokyo adventures that we had to purchase an additional suitcase. And now, even that one is bursting at the seams. Alex and I shared a lighthearted moment, joking that we might need yet another suitcase before our journey concludes!

And now, we find ourselves aboard the Shinkansen, halfway to Hiroshima, gazing out the window at the breathtaking vistas of lush green mountains, serene rice fields, and quaint buildings passing by. Soon, we will arrive in Hiroshima to explore this historically significant city. However, our stay in Hiroshima will be brief, as we are eager to embark on a ferry and venture to the captivating island of Miyajima, nestled just off the coast. I promise I will try to be more diligent in updating the blog as we leave behind the bustling metropolis and embrace the tranquility of the countryside. Walking nearly eight miles a day for seven consecutive days has certainly taken its toll, but the experiences have been worth every step.

Until next time,

~t
